It’s wonderful to know you can provide consistent and reliable heat to industrial pipes and appliances with such small heating elements. That’s what you get from durable, modern fixtures like our Mica Band Heaters and Ceramic Band Heaters. These instruments can apply upwards of 1,400-degree heat to suit a variety of purposes.
What’s the difference between Mica and Ceramic band heaters? Check out these important variables to further comprehend the distinctions.
Temperature Potential - The first important difference between the two is the temperature capacity. Mica band heaters have an outstanding temperature potential of about 800 degrees. Ceramic band heaters achieve even greater temperatures as high as 1,400 degrees.
Costs - Although the mica band heaters max out at a lower temperature than their ceramic counterparts, this is offset by lower costs. Mica versions involve thinner materials than the more extensive ceramic knuckles, which incur a higher price tag.
Life Expectancy - Most ceramic band heaters enjoy a longer life expectancy than mica band heaters. This is primarily because the resistance wire has a smaller ratio of surface area to internal cross-sectional area, making it less vulnerable to oxidation and deterioration.
Watt Density - The mica band heaters often have better heat transfer (and therefore, higher watt density) from the ribbon to the rest of the heater. They also don’t have as much unheated area since they tend to be smaller than ceramic fixtures.
Customization - The denser and larger ceramic knuckles are less amenable to customization than mica materials. They can only be customized in ½” increments, whereas you can manipulate a mica band heater at any width.
Insulation Properties - Ceramic band heaters have more extensive insulation than mica band heaters. They contain a ⅜” layer of ceramic paper insulation over the knuckles to go along with a stainless-steel outer sheath for heat reflection. More premium ceramic versions will include two additional ⅜” layers of ceramic paper along with yet another protective sheath.
We hope this helps you gain a better understanding of Mica Band Heaters and Ceramic Band Heaters.
